“L’Ossola, bellissima tra le valli delle Alpi, ha dato guerrieri alla barbarie e dotti alla civiltà, Papi alla Chiesa e all’eresia Fra Dolcino, scoperte alla scienza e alle signore… l’Acqua di Colonia.”
Giuseppe Chiovenda

The exhibition, set up in conjunction with the release of the biographical dictionary created by Enrico Rizzi and published by Grossi Edizioni, showcases the most prominent among the Ossolani. These individuals, traversing the roads of Europe and the world, have left traces of their work: sometimes eccentric personalities, whose immense contributions have often been overshadowed by the tempests of history. This fundamental chapter, never adequately studied, in the history of the valley is no less important than the unfolding of political events, dominations, wars, and natural disasters, which represent the only well-known and extensively studied aspects of Ossolan historiography. The exhibition aims to reintroduce, especially to the younger generation, a sense of belonging to their own community and awareness of their roots. And to all those who love or frequent the Ossola region, it proudly showcases the history and culture of the valley through its most prestigious expressions of excellence.

Of the 300 prominent figures from Ossola’s past – whose biographies appear in the Dictionary – the exhibition particularly illustrates 80. The ten halls of Palazzo Silva will host panels, documentary showcases, videos, ancient manuscripts, and printed works preserved in the ancient section of the Contini Library (formerly Galletti Foundation) and in private collections. Rare memorabilia, such as the precious ceremonial dress worn by Giovanni Battista Palletta at the baptism of Napoleon’s son in Paris, will also be displayed. The exhibition is enriched with a dedicated section showcasing paintings depicting the great Ossolan figures. In addition to original artworks preserved in the Civic Museums of Domodossola, reproductions of paintings with prestigious signatures, from Guido Reni to Francesco Hayez, preserved in Italian and foreign museums, will be exhibited. The exhibition will conclude on October 15th with a conference on the theme: “The genius of Ossolani in the world: an ongoing project.
